KCATA purchases and demolishes at 27th and Prospect to set the stage for new development

The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority will host a ceremonial building demolition event at 10 a.m. Aug. 1, 2018, on the southeast corner of 27th and Prospect. Highlighting the event will be comments from U.S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, KCMO Mayor Sly James, 3rd District Councilman Jermaine Reed, and others. The Youth Choir from Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church will also perform.

“KCATA’s commitment goes beyond running buses up and down the street,” said Robbie Makinen, KCATA president & CEO. “We are also committed to driving economic and community development by making our neighborhoods cleaner and safer. We hope this demolition demonstrates what a good neighbor transit can be in revitalizing the Prospect Corridor.”

The KCATA has contracted with MBE-DBE Excavating & Grading, based in Kansas City, Kansas. The demolition of the 4,200 sq. ft. building and filling of the basement area, topped with topsoil and grass seed, should be completed in approximately two weeks. The current site represents a safety hazard. With the eventual removal of the building, it will strengthen the safety and improve the appearance of this intersection and surrounding neighborhood. The cleared property is expected to be more attractive to potential investors, particularly with new developments on the west side of the street.

Lipari Brothers Sun Fresh Market

The long-awaited Sun Fresh grocery at Linwood Boulevard and Prospect Avenue held its grand opening celebration Saturday and was heralded as a key ingredient to area revitalization efforts.

The full service grocery in the Linwood Shopping Center has been a dream of urban core advocates and the Kansas City Council for years. The city invested about $17 million in public funds, including land acquisition and the cost to build the new store, to renovate the end wings of the retail center and to rebuild the parking lot.

It’s unusual for the city to take the lead in a development like this, but city officials said it was worth it to jump start a struggling shopping center in a neglected part of town and to boost a major commercial corridor on the East Side.

“Every community deserves a full-service grocery store,” said City Councilman Jermaine Reed, who represents the part of town that includes the shopping center. “The new Lipari Brothers Sun Fresh Market and redeveloped Linwood Shopping Center provides an opportunity to bring new and/or improved retail services for area residents.”

Kansas City Police Department East Patrol & Crime Lab

JE Dunn completed the Leon Mercer Jordan Campus, which consists of a 56,000 SF Crime Lab with an additional 12,000 SF property evidence depository, a 23,000 SF patrol station with a 12,000 SF community center and a 5,000 SF central utility plant that serves the entire 18-arce campus.

The crime lab includes administrative departments, building/technical support, chemistry lab, crime scene lab, DNA lab, digital forensics lab, DVA/trace evidence lab, evidence intake, fire arms lab and indoor firing range, latent and ten prints lab and biology lab. The Property Evidence Depository is state-of-the-art with mobile shelving, evidence lockers and inventory system. This building consolidated three previous facilities into one.

The patrol station includes a detention area with four holding cells, sallyport, roll call room, firearm storage, property crimes, weightlifting/cardio/training room, locker rooms and an administrative area. The community center includes a gymnasium with basketball courts, community meeting room, computer lab, and a concessions area for use by the community, police and crime lab staff. This is open to the public and is intended to help bridge the gap between the Kansas City Police Department and the community.

The parking area consists of all surface lots. Security measures and access controls are in effect in each building.

Morningstar Youth & Family Life Center

Area youth will benefit from recreational, and and employment training opportunities. As new businesses and projects emerge, it is important to position our youth for new opportunities that will ultimately sustain progress throughout our community .

The Morningstar Youth & Family Life Center is a $5 million project located at 27th Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri’s East side. Over $2 million was spent on acquiring and demolishing 30-35 dilapidated and dangerous buildings in order to clear the land and construct a new 13,000 square foot community center.

Aldi Grocery Store

Prospect Avenue has long been considered a food desert now has a new grocery store to help bring affordable, healthy options to those living there.

There aren’t many grocery options in that neighborhood on the east side of the city. The closest store isn’t within walking distance, a problem in a community where many people do not have cars.

The new store hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
